LONDON (AP) - Often criticized for his theatrics, Luis Suarez stood out for the right reasons Sunday with a brilliant equalizer for Liverpool in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in the English Premier League.
Steven Gerrard made his 600th appearance for Liverpool but was overshadowed at Anfield by Suarez, who produced a wonderful display of skill to bring down a raking pass on his chest and move around the goalkeeper in one movement to earn his team a deserved point in the 67th minute.
"His first touch from that height was an incredible piece of skill - he is a world-class striker," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
Liverpool, however, missed a chance to climb into the top half of the standings for the first time this season, with the 18-time English champions again failing to win at home despite dominating for large periods.
Newcastle scored from one of its rare forays forward, with Yohan Cabaye volleying home superbly in the 43rd after good work by Hatem Ben Arfa, and was forced to hang on with 10 men after Fabricio Coloccini was red-carded with about 6 minutes remaining in regulation time.
"Suarez is a great player. He was causing us problems and if we could have wrapped him up, we would have won the game," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.
In Sunday's other game, Queens Park Rangers and Reading remain winless in the league after drawing 1-1 at Loftus Road, leaving both teams in the bottom three and destined for a season of struggle.
Former France striker Djibril Cisse rescued a point for the hosts by poking home a close-range finish in the 66th, canceling out an acrobatic opener scored by Kaspars Gorkss - a former QPR player.
The point provisionally lifts QPR off the bottom of the table above Southampton, which plays on Monday against West Bromwich Albion, but the result will increase the pressure on manager Mark Hughes.
"We're working exceptionally hard on a daily basis to turn this around and we'll get there, we know that," said Hughes, who continues to receive the backing of owner Tony Fernandes.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Espanyol and Deportivo La Coruna earned much-needed second wins in the Spanish league to help both clubs provisionally rise from the relegation zone.
Espanyol won 1-0 at Real Sociedad for its first away victory after 10 rounds, while Deportivo ended an eight-game winless run by edging out visiting Mallorca 1-0.
Also, Patrick Ebert's late goal gave Valladolid a 1-0 win at 10-man Osasuna, leaving the Pamplona-based club languishing in last place.
Later, Levante visits Sevilla seeking a fourth consecutive win that would propel it into fourth place, keeping the team in the thick of the race for a Champions League spot.
Also, Athletic Bilbao is at Granada.

ROME (AP) - A defensive blunder by Napoli allowed a stoppage-time equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Torino, hurting the southern club's title chances.
Lazio also dropped back after getting beat 4-0 by Catania, while Fiorentina was the day's big winner after beating Cagliari 4-1 to jump ahead of Lazio into fourth place.
After sitting out Napoli's last two matches with a minor injury, Edinson Cavani celebrated his return by scoring six minutes in at the San Paolo stadium from the edge of the box - his seventh goal in nine appearances this season.
But shortly after Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri was sent off for protests, Torino's Gianluca Sansone equalized with his first Serie A goal after intercepting defender Salvatore Aronica's unwise pass back to his goalkeeper.
Juventus, which was beat 3-1 by Inter Milan in "Italy's derby" Saturday, leads with 28 points. Inter is next with 27, Napoli has 23, Fiorentina 21 and Lazio 19.
Earlier, struggling Pescara beat in-form Parma 2-0 to save the job of its manager, Giovanni Stroppa. The victory promoted Pescara out of the relegation zone, three points clear of Palermo, which was third to last ahead of its match at Roma later.
"It wasn't an easy buildup to the match," Stroppa said. "I read in some places that it would mark my funeral."
Parma, which had won three straight, remained sixth, tied with Catania and Atalanta, 13 points back.
Atalanta won 2-1 at Sampdoria, Antonio Di Natale scored a 73rd-minute equalizer as Udinese drew 1-1 at Bologna and last-place Siena - which has a six-point penalty for match-fixing - beat Genoa 1-0.

BERLIN (AP) - Bayer Leverkusen held on for a 3-2 win over Fortuna Duesseldorf to extend its unbeaten Bundesliga run to seven games.
Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam opened the scoring with a deft chip in the 16th minute, only for Nando Rafael to equalize with a deflected header from a corner in the 40th.
Andre Schuerrle replied immediately, blasting home from close range after the visiting defense failed to clear Sam's cross.
The game seemed to swing in Fortuna's favor in the 65th, when Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes was sent off for a clumsy challenge on Adam Bodzek.
But Leverkusen scored again two minutes later, when Daniel Carvajal blocked a shot and chased the ball down the length of the pitch before crossing for Gonzalo Castro to tap into the empty net.
Werder Bremen was scheduled to host Mainz in Sunday's late game.

PARIS (AP) - Brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew scored second-half goals as Marseille won 2-0 at Ajaccio to tie Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the French league, while Lyon overcame spirited resistance from Bastia to win 5-2 and move provisionally into third.
Andre Ayew had been one of Marseille's best players during the past two seasons, scoring 18 league goals from the wing, but his form has been patchy this campaign and he netted for the first time this season following a goalmouth scramble in the 55th minute.
Jordan Ayew hit his third of the season after being set up by Mathieu Valbuena in the 88th.
Marseille had lost its past three games without scoring a goal, and was knocked out of the League Cup by PSG on Wednesday, having won the competition three years in a row.
Toulouse plays Bordeaux later Sunday.

AMSTERDAM (AP) - Goals from Nacer Chadli, Dusan Tadic and Luc Castaignos gave FC Twente a 3-0 win against Feyenoord in the Dutch league.
The prettiest goal was the first, with Tadic dribbling past four Feyenoord players before passing for Chadli to finish from 10 meters. Castaignos scored after controlling a long-range pass, and Tadic found the net from a free kick.
Twente coach Steve McClaren says "we scored at the right times and didn't give much away."
PSV Eindhoven gave Heracles Almelo a 4-0 drubbing, and defending champion Ajax lost 2-0 at home to Vitesse to drop to fifth place in the standings. Wilfried Bony scored twice for Vitesse against a lackluster Ajax in comparison to the team that beat Manchester City in its last Champions League outing.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Celtic surrendered a two-goal lead in the final minutes to draw 2-2 with Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League, leaving the defending champions even on points with second-place Hibernian at the top of the standings.
Celtic looked as though it would warm up for Wednesday's Champions League match against Barcelona with a comfortable win when Tony Watt put the team ahead 2-0 in the 80th minute, adding to Miku's opener in the 69th.
However, Gary Mackay-Steven halved the deficit for the hosts in the 89th before Celtic defender Efe Ambrose glanced a header into his own net after two minutes of stoppage time.
Celtic is tied with Hibs on 21 points - three clear of a trio of rivals - but has a game in hand.
