Pellegrini's Man City loses SAfrican tour opener

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -New coach Manuel Pellegrini will need a little more time to mold Manchester City into a Premier League title challenger after it lost 2-0 to Supersport United to open its pre-season tour of South Africa on Sunday.
Senegalese striker Mame Niang and South African international Kermit Erasmus scored second-half goals for Supersport at Loftus Versfeld to beat a City team clearly in pre-season mode and far from top gear.
Edin Dzeko and James Milner went closest to scoring for City, while Pellegrini fielded completely different lineups in each half. Brazil midfielder Fernandinho started for City in a subdued debut alongside young Spanish midfielder Denis Suarez. Both made way in the wholesale changes for the second 45.
Niang rose between defenders Joleon Lescott and Matja Nastasic to head past reserve goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon for the opener in the 56th minute. Erasmus ran on to a defense-splitting pass to flick the ball past Pantilimon and into the far right corner for the second in the 82nd.
Dzeko had combined with Samir Nasri to force a double save from Ronwen Williams in the opening 20 minutes and Milner was denied by a combination of substitute `keeper Boalefa Phule - one of Supersport's host of changes - and a diving block by a defender in the 73rd.
Apart from that, City created little and wasn't anywhere near its best form having only started proper pre-season preparations last week, according to Pellegrini.
"I think it's always important to win but it's not the most important thing at the moment," Pellegrini said. "We are very far (from top form). We've just had our first week. When pre-season continues, after three weeks or a month, we will see where we are."
The likes of goalkeeper Joe Hart, captain Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho, Nasri and Dzeko all went off at halftime, with Lescott and Nastasic coming on and Yaya Toure taking over as skipper.
Toure had a speculative long-range shot in the 76th that sailed over the crossbar before he limped off at the very end.
City's players unveiled a shirt dedicated to ailing former South African President Nelson Mandela before kickoff, and the Premier League visitors will play their second game on tour on Thursday to mark the 95th birthday of the anti-apartheid icon.

NBA Free Agency: Cleveland Cavaliers among most improved rosters
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a productive offseason. According to an article on ESPN, they had one of the top 5 offseasons among teams around the NBA.
The Cleveland Cavaliers made fairly big splashes in both the NBA Draft and NBA free agency. But making a splash doesn't always mean that you have improved your team. According to Amin Elhassan at ESPN.com, the Cavaliers had one of the best offseasons.
Elhassan ranks the Los Angeles Clippers as having the best offseason, just ahead of the Houston Rockets. The Cavaliers come in 5th, after the Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets. The most obvious way that the Cavaliers were able to improve their roster was through the draft. As you know, the Cavs had the #1 and #19 picks in the draft. Despite the fact that most people were surprised by the selection of Anthony Bennett, Elhassan writes highly of the talent that he brings to the Cavs.
Drafting Anthony Bennett and Sergey Karasev: It almost seems unfair that Cleveland should draw the No. 1 overall pick a mere two seasons after drafting Irving first overall. While Bennett is currently injured, he brings a lot upside as an inside-outside frontcourt threat.
He also speaks very highly of Sergey Karasev.
Karasev also was an excellent selection. A 6-foot-7 wing with deep range and good feel, Karasev has the potential to fill the hole the Cavs have at small forward, providing Irving with another spacer on the floor.
Unlike most of the other teams on the list of most improved rosters, the Cavaliers were able to utilize both the draft and free agency to add talent. Amin Elhassan also praised the additions of Andrew Bynum and Jarrett Jack.
Signing Andrew Bynum: It is easy to forget that a year ago the general consensus was that Bynum would sign a max extension upon arriving in Philadelphia. To sign him to a two-year, $24 million deal with a team option on the second year and just $6 million guaranteed in the first year is nothing short of a home run. But the Cavs will gladly turn in the cost savings in favor of Bynum actually playing.
Although it's possible that the Cavs slightly overpaid for Jarrett Jack, their particular situation makes it a solid signing. The health of Kyrie Irving is slightly concerning in the near future. If Jack can allow Kyrie to avoid some additional damage, that's probably worth a couple million alone.
Signing Jarrett Jack: While paying $6.25 million per year for a backup point guard is a little steep for my taste (I had Jack valued at $4.5 million per year), it is a luxury Cleveland can afford. Irving has missed an average of 19 games per year so far in his career, and Jack not only gives them an insurance policy should he go down, but also a means to reduce the wear and tear on the All-Star guard by shortening his minutes.

In a review of two recent novels that feature professor-student affairs, reviewer Michelle Dean asks where is the frank discussion of power?? She writes,
The professor-student romance debate similarly breaks down, for the most part, to two opposing views. In one corner you have your Roiphes and your Paglias, who style themselves as revolutionaries for celebrating the power dynamics of the status quo. In the other you have feminists more aligned with Andrea Dworkin who seem to believe one can remove power from relationships entirely.

At least, I?ve never read a word of Dworkin to mean that there was any such thing as sexuality without power.? This is a woman who was closely aligned with Catherine Mackinnon, the woman who wrote ?man f^(ks woman, subject verb object.?)
So what do these new novelistic treatments of professor-student sexual relationships have to say about them?? Both Susan Choi?s My Education and Jessica Lott?s The Rest of Us ?seem ultimately uncomfortable with the very subject they have taken on?as though their authors are ultimately unwilling to confront the thicket of moral issues such relationships raise.?? In Choi?s novel, the relationship is between two women, and in Lott?s book it?s a heterosexual affair, but both books ultimately shy away from talking about power.
Part of the reason, Dean suggests, is that ?neither author makes her protagonist the actual student, in the literal sense, of her lover. Terry, the student in Lott?s book, only audited a class by her eventual lover Rhinehart, a famous poet and professor. Choi?s Regina becomes involved with her professor?s wife, Martha, who is herself an academic.? But Dean doesn?t buy this evasion:
If one party is always a teacher, and the other a student, in a relationship, then someone has the upper hand. That someone is Henry Higgins to his Eliza. Both Choi and Lott are coy on this point. It is out of vogue to talk about power and its uses in any direct way, so they don?t. And funnily enough, it is the silence about that dynamic that, more than anything, brings out the frustrated Puritan in women who look from afar upon these relationships. Like me, reading these books, thinking about the stories I used to hear of the professors who harvested the undergraduates each fall, remembering how prudish it felt to observe the predictable clich? of it all.
Of course, all love has an element of worship, and worshipper and worshipee are not unlike student and teacher. But the gold standards of romance, those beloved 19th-century novels, understood that the worship isn?t always deserved, and provokes suffering. Think of Colonel Brandon waiting at a respectful distance for Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility. (It helps to lean on Alan Rickman?s heavy-lidded interpretation here.) Think of how Jane Eyre resolves to deal with Mr. Rochester?s deceit: ?Not a human being that ever lived could wish to be loved better than I was loved; and him who thus loved me I absolutely worshipped: and I must renounce love and idol.?
So it?s curious to find that in The Rest of Us and My Education, the renunciation of the teacher-idol never happens. Terry and Rhinehart do not live happily ever after, but neither does Terry begin to see his faults clearly. Regina and Martha are able to treat each other more maturely because of the passage of years?and so the reader is robbed of the chance to say to Martha: ?My God, what were you thinking?? And never mind the reader?rebellion doesn?t seem to be an option even for the students, either. They remain simple receptors of the teacher?s message in the end. All faults are the students? own; they were the ones with growing up to do.
Both books, then, ignore the crucial emotional experience of resenting the person who made you worship them when you were young and impressionable. As one should, by the way.
Although it?s feminism that encouraged us to think about power in sexual relationships, it?s clearly another countervailing? force in feminist thought that animates Choi?s and Lott?s novels:? the rejection of women?s victimhood.? I see the same thing in a great deal of feminist historical scholarship, too.? Feminist scholars are extraordinarily reluctant to portray their subjects as victims in any way.
This is especially true in recent women?s history.? For example, over my recent vacation I read Lois Banner?s recent biography of Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn (2012).? I found Banner?s argument that MM was an invention of herself and a second-wave feminist avant la lettre compelling and convincing.? However, I wondered how that reading of MM?s life squares with its sad ending:? Banner mentions only in passing that MM was bugged by J. Edgar Hoover at the time of her death!? She was carrying on affairs with both President John Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, in the last years of her life, and she strongly implies that if Bobby Kennedy was not also involved in her murder, he was at least heavily involved in the cleanup after her death.? Banner also mentions casually that MM?s drug use may have led to?an anal gang-rape by Sam Giancana and his cronies at a party in Palm Springs!? I think it?s wrong to see MM only as a victim or creation manipulated by others, but we can see her as both the author of her own life and also the victim of circumstances beyond her ability to control as well.
Young women?s sexuality can be used as a kind of power, and it can make them feel powerful.? But it?s not unambiguously an instrument to power in the way that money or real power is?the kind that the Kennedys, Hoover, and Giancana possessed and used ruthlessly.? I think that historians and novelists alike can tell women?s stories in complex ways that avoid both total victimhood or total empowerment, if they want to.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Coaches fight over players like Chris Worley. The incoming Ohio State freshman from Glenville could be claimed by safeties coach Everett Withers. He could be snagged by linebackers coach Luke Fickell.
Listed at 185 pounds as a recruit, Worley apparently has already added about 17 pounds since reporting. The idea is to be big enough to play like a linebacker without losing his ability to run like a safety. There's one part of the game where designations don't matter.
Everyone can be a piranha.

As the Buckeyes continue to recruit leaner, faster defenders, Urban Meyer continues to gather nominees for his special teams. Ideally, those coverage units should be made up of young, hungry Buckeyes who haven't learned enough to get on the field full-time, but who can certainly run down and tackle somebody. Last year, the coaches called that group the piranhas.
Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. Ohio State ranked 50th in the nation in kickoff return yardage allowed, and saw one kick run back for a score, by Purdue's Akeem Hunt.
Without backup quarterback's Kenny Guiton's late-game heroics, that kick return would have been a major reason Ohio State lost its undefeated season.
After excelling on kick coverage, injuries knocked freshmen Devan Bogard, Najee Murray and Armani Reeves out of the lineup and off the coverage teams. The Buckeyes noticed.
That's why freshmen Worley, Mike Mitchell, Trey Johnson, Vonn Bell, Darron Lee, Gareon Conley, Eli Apple and Cam Burrows could make a difference right away in 2013 without earning starting jobs. They don't have to know everything right away. But while joining those returning sophomore coverage contenders, they have to be able to stay in their coverage lane, run and make a tackle.
Do that, and their position coaches will continue to fight over them.
